Life as we know is replication of DNA. Thats it, replicating DNA is life.
DNA in order to replicate used other elements around it to carry out chemical reactions to recreate itself. Then DNA got sophisticated and create cell boundaries around it. Soon DNA in different cells organized in the form of multi-celled creatures and formed all types of animals and plants. Sort of like how a one man can run only a small business but when many people come together can they can create the biggest companies where everyone makes more money then what they can make individually.
Through evolution DNA learned that this world is vary competitive and it has to replicate every chance it gets. We see one celled organisms reproduce as fast as they can process food around them. Plants compete with each other to reach the best possible position for spreading there pollen. In animal kingdom, powerful males have many partners, so that there DNA can survive. It seems if animal are able to reproduce they will reproduce.
This behavior seems to be present in humans too. But there is something interesting about humans.
It seems as human life expectancy increases, the size of their families decreases. In old times, it was common to have more than 12 children. But now a family with more 5 children are abnormal. Shouldn’t DNA be trying to replicate itself as much as possible.
I know most people rather go hungry than sell their sperm. Why? Aren’t they doing favor to their DNA by donating sperms. Someone else is going to take care of their DNA. It seems biggest worry is that they wont be able to raise their kids according to their ideals.
I guess once DNA is certain that it will survive the next generation then it becomes less competitive and thats when ideas become more important than life. Some one will have a fewer children so that they can raise their children better. Some one will refuse to marry someone because of different ideals. Some people even kill their children because of differing ideas.
So I would say if we define life as replication of DNA then ideas are bigger than life.
