Like anything, I suppose the appropriate answer is “It depends.” But there is something to be said about constantly creating and applying skills versus just consuming a lot by reading. This is the challenge I am facing with iPhone development. I love love love reading about it; but it is enhanced and only materializes with the creation of something.
Relating it to the music world, one may “create” many musical ideas before settling on some that are truly cohesive and worthy of showcasing their talents…=)
True… I think the point of his post was you have to do it a lot before you get any better at something. As you said, you may only showcase your best music but you “created” many before it.
I read in the book Outliers that it take 10,000 hours of practice of something before you are truly great at it. 10,000 hours translate roughly into 8-10 years of practice.
