There really are only three options on what to do with a screaming baby: leave it to cry until its next feed on your timetable (Truby King in the 1920s); leave it to cry for a little while (Soranus); pick it up and feed it straight away (Benjamin Spock, later backed up by some pseudo-science which claimed that the stress of crying would prevent the proper development of the baby’s brain).
